A Blog for Aspiring Writers
As editors, we understand why individuals might abandon their dreams of becoming writers.
An editor’s perspective.
Too many writers abandon their goals out of frustration and fear because they lack the knowledge and experience necessary to continue their journey with confidence. They typically lack knowledge and expertise in areas required to take their writing to the next level.
We created “Tips for Aspiring Writers” to provide practical advice and suggestions. We hope our posts will help you enhance your skills, discover your “writing process,” and facilitate the journey of preparing work for publication.
Our experience has helped us develop an eye for detail. We’ve seen the habits and practices that help writers become more productive. We’ve also seen the mistakes and obstacles that can prove detrimental to a writer’s development.
So you want to become a writer?
We’ll use our blog to address some of the most critical aspects of a writer’s work. These include the “mechanics” of writing (grammar and language use) and where and when to write (environment and time management).
We’ll even address the mental barriers that often plague writers. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “The ancestor of every action is a thought.”
This is certainly true of writers. Your thoughts about your work as a writer will influence your process, practices, and even your productivity.
What do you want to do with your writing?
Many are short-sighted about vocations and avocations in writing. Becoming a writer is certainly more than a commitment to writing a book.
When writers find they can’t complete a book, they often assume failure and abandon their goals. Fortunately, there’s more to a life of writing than being a published author. Instead of quitting, perhaps they should consider re-imagining their goals.
My wife and I started our business by writing blog articles for businesspeople and professionals who don’t have the time to write regularly.
As our role in editing developed, we’ve been fortunate to work with authors and help prepare their manuscripts (nonfiction) for publication. However, most of our work has involved writers who produce:
- Blog articles and posts
- Feature articles (print publications)
- Trade journal articles
- Grant narratives
- Newsletters (online and print)
- Magazine articles
- PowerPoint presentations
- Website content
- Business narratives
- Sales and marketing materials
How do I begin the journey?
Your writing journey has likely already begun. If not, you can start today. Your best chance of success lies in your decision to become a writer and your daily commitment to writing.
You don’t have to become a published author or take a vow of poverty to become a writer. Moreover, you don’t have to give up your day job. Unlike the image you may have in mind, most writers I know are gainfully employed full-time.
However, they seize opportunities at work and make time outside of work to write.
The opportunity to learn and become a better writer may be immediately available in your present employment.
- Seek opportunities for writing projects and assignments at work. Your employer will likely review whatever you write. This type of scrutiny will help you improve as a writer. Furthermore, you’ll get paid to assist your employer while continuing to develop your writing skills.
- Learn to block time at home to write about the subjects that are most important to you. Then, ask someone you can trust to read what you’ve written and offer their feedback objectively.
